THE MUNICIPALITY OF STYRA

The Municipality of Styra, which includes several towns and communities, is located some 30 kilometres north of the historic harbour and ancient town of Karystos, and 80 kilometres south of Halkida, the capital of Evia and a famed fortress city in its own right for thousands of years, especially during the island's Latin period and the subsequent Ottoman occupation.

Five separate districts comprise the municipality: Styra proper; the seaport and resort of Nea Styra, Polypotamos, Mesohoria and Almyropotamos. Communities of varying sizes include Porto Lafia, Niborio, Kapsala, Kagadaioi, Zoodohos Pigis (known by locals as Reouzi), Karalides (Elaiohori), Tsaikaioi, Raptaioi and Panagia (Almyropotamos' beach). The Municipality of Marmari lies to the south, while Distos Municipality borders to the north.

Endless beaches and coves dot the municipality's western coast on the southern Evoikos gulf facing Attica prefecture across the strait. As expected, Styra district's western coast is where practically all of the towns are located as well as the overwhelming destination of most visitors to the area. Conversely, the district's rugged and isolated eastern coast, facing the Aegean, is a "must see" for visitors expecting scenery along the lines of what noted British author John Fowles referred to as "Wild Greece".

It's the combination of natural beauty along with archaeological and historical significance that have turned Styra into one of Evia's most interesting and relaxed tourist destinations. For the most part, "Traditional Greece" intertwined with "cosmopolitan Athens " co-exist harmoniously along Styra's western shores.
