Urban space design has recently emerged as the discipline which establishes
the interrupted communication between architecture and urban planning. From
the initial phase when it was concerned only with the visual appearance
of parts of the city and the "spaces-in-between", through the
period in which visual aspects received less attention the the social, cultural
and economic aspects, urban space design has turned full circle. It has
returned to its primary concern with the built environment without neglecting
the social, cultural and economic factors which all contribute to the design
of successful and memorable urban spaces. This will be the central interest
of this session of the summer school. The lectures will be grouped around
three core subjects:
Approaches to urban space design - aimed at the presentation of changing
attitudes towards urban space design in the second half of the 20th century.
Theory of urban form - dealing with the epistemological problems of the
general theory of urban form and
Urban Space Syntax - dealing with the theoretical basis of the Space Syntax
method, which involves the layout of buildings and street patterns forecasting
the way these will be used when built as well as the practical application
of the method through the developed techniques of simulation and modelling
in strategic urban design.
The list of invited lecturers includes Ranko Radovic (University of Novi
Sad), Peter Gabrijelcic (University of Ljubljana), Tim Stonor (University
College London), Constantinos Spiridonidis (Aristoteles University, Thessaloniki),
Radoslav Zuk (McGill University, Montreal), Liiza Knuuti (University of
Helsinki) and Zivko Popovski, Andrej Tokarev, Jasmina Hadzieva, Miroslav
Grcev and Vlatko Korobar (University "SS. Cyril and Methodius",
Skopje).
The work in the summer school will include lectures, seminars and workshops.
Young faculty members will conduct workshops each with 2-3 students. The
workshops will center on projects for the nearby town of Kriva Palanka.
In recent years, the town of Kriva Palanka has extended onto the other bank
of the Kriva Reka. The new development provides a host of topics for urban
design interventions like the interconnection of the two parts of the town,
the role of the riverfront, the character of the new developments and their
improvements, the location of the new railway line and the railway station
and its implications for the town...
The session will be headed by Dr.Vlatko P. Korobar, lecturer at the Faculty
of Architecture.
