NATIONAL THEATRE BITOLA [ MACEDONIA ]

“The Spirit of Freedom” 100 years later

The performance you’ll see is a result of the collaboration between two playwrights and three directors.

The one-act play “The Spirit of Freedom” was written by Voydan Chernodrinski, back in 1905 and it deals with the 1903 Ilinden uprising against the Turkish occupation. In 2003, Goran Stefanovski created this version of the play, which, apart from the original first act of Chernodrinski, contains two more acts. They take place in the present and in the future. Those two parts represent a commentary on the original play and are based on the situations and characters given by Chernodrinski.

This unique approach required a corresponding one in staging the play. Therefore, three young directors were engaged in the project, each working on a single act of the play. Our provocation was that each of us ought to make one small performance, which at the end became a part of a larger whole.
