Sven Nykvist is born on December 3, 1922 at the town of Moheda, Sweden, as a son of a Protestant missionary in Africa. Educated strictly, he was forbidden in youth to go to the cinema. He intended to devote himself to photography, but since 1940 he works as Assistant-Cameramen in the Italian studios in Cinecitta in Rome, and from the next year in the same post for the Swedish Producer Sandrew's. In 1945 he starts independent filming, and achieves international glory with the films of Ingmar Bergman, becoming permanent member of his team since 1960 when THE VIRGIN SPRINGS is made. Best achievements in black-and-white photography are given with the anthological films: THE SILENCE (1963), and PERSONA (1966), with a refined feeling for the limits of realistic and stylization; while in color photography he achieves the greatest artistic levels with the films: |
CRIES AND WHISPERS (1972) and FANNY AND ALEXANDER (1982), two works with a special
color expression and dramatic function, for which Nykvist has been awarded with the
highest world award for film-making, the Academy Award - Oscar
. In Bergman's films Nykvist pays particular attention to building the light
as well as to the strict functionality of the picture composition. Beside this, he has
also, experimented with the film tape.
Since 1970 Nykvist works for international productions also, showing
his ability to adapt to any film, i.e. to any Director, succeeding in the same time to
safeguard his own creative integrity. As his most significant collaboration with world
Directors the following films may be indicated: the French - BLACK MOON (Director: Louis
Malle, 1975) for which he has been awarded with a Cesar (the first to be awarded), than
the Americans: WE WERE ALL HIPPIES (Director: Paul Mazursky, 1980); THE POSTMAN ALWAYS
RINGS TWICE (Director: Bob Raffleson, 1981); STAR 80 (Director: Bob Fosse, 1983); AGNES OF
GOD (Director: Norman Jewison, 1985); ANOTHER WOMAN (Director Woody Allen, 198); CHAPLIN
(Director: Richard Atthenborough, 1992) as well as the last film of Andrey Tarkowsky, THE
SACRIFICE (1986) for which he receive the Cannes Festival Award. Sven Nykvist has made a
number of TV-films and in his rich filmography he appears 4 times as director of feature
films and a number of documentaries, he has written two times the texts for the films that
he directed. He has acted as producer for his film ONE AND ONE (1978, under his directing
with the actress Ingrid Tulin and actor Erland Joseffson), and he acted in the film A LOOK
AT LIV (1977). For the portrait - documentary VISIONS OF LIGHT: THE ART OF CINEMATOGRAPHY
