THE REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA in addition to its past history, has4 very important dates in the 20th Century:

       - On August 2, 1903, the Macedonian`revolutionaries organized the Macedonians in a major insurrection-THE ILINDEN
UPRISING against Turkish occupation, when THE KRUSEVO REPUBLIC was established, which lasted for only 10 days.
        - On August 2, 1944, at the First Session of the Anti-Fascist Assembly of the Peoples Liberation of Macedonia: (ASNOM) The Macedonian Republic was proclaimed, which later became part of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
        - On September 8, 1991, after the dissolution of the Yugoslav Federation, Macedonia held a referendum which proclaimed THE REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA as a sovereign and independent state...
   - On April 8, 1993, The Republic of Macedonia became the 181st Member of the United Nations Organization, up to now being recognized by more than 70 countries worldwide... 
        - The Republic of Macedonia is situated in the heart of the Balkan Peninsula with an area of 25.713 sq.km and with a population of more than 2 million. The Republic of Macedonia is a native State of the Macedonian People and several other minorities living there. 
    - Beside 1,4 million Macedonians in today's Republic of  Macedonia (which are Orthodox Christians) more than 700.000

        - The Capital of the Republic of Macedonia is SKOPJE with about half a million citizens. On July 26, 1963, Skopje was devastated by a catastrophic earthquake...
 - The Republic of Macedonia has more than 30 mountain peaks exceeding 2.000 m. in height, where a few modern ski 
centers, such as: Popova Shapka, Mavrovo, Krushevo and Pelister, as well as 4 national parks, are situated... 
        - Macedonia has more than 50 natural or artificial lakes. The largest ones, also being tourist resorts are: Lake OHRID (349sq.km.) which together with the town of Ohrid has been placed under the protection of UNESCO as an outstanding environment; Lake PRESPA (274 sq. km.) and Lake DOJRAN... 
        - The Republic of Macedonia has 2 international airports in: Skopje and Ohrid...
        - There are over 50 private Radio stations and TV Channels operating in the Republic of Macedonia, but the main National and State Broadcasting Center is MRTV (Macedonian Radio and TV)...
- A total of 15 newspaper and 75 periodicals are published in Macedonia 12 enterprises are engaged in book publishing. There are 127 public libraries, the largest and the best known is the" Clement of Ohrid", National and University Library, Skopje...
 
        - The Republic of Macedonia has 2 Universities: the St. Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje, and the University of Bitola, with about 30.000 students. The highest scholarly institution is the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MASA). 
        - Macedonia has 10 national theaters and two more for the albanian and turkish minorities. The Central Theater Institution is MNT (Macedonian National Theater) consisting: of Drama, Opera and Ballet. Macedonia also has a National Philharmonic Orchestra. 
    - The first multiparty Parlament of the Republic of Macedonia was officially constituted on January 8, 1991, after the democratic elections among 17 political parties. The President of the Republic of Macedonia is Mr. Kiro GLIGOROV... 
        - Macedonia's cultural heritage is exceptionally rich, a number of old churches and monasteries famous for their icons and frescoes. For this reason Macedonia has often been referred to as: "as magical country for the archaeology" with many ancient towns like: Stobi, Scupi, Heraclea, Bargala, Lychnidos and others. The Macedonian collection of medieval Icons is one of the 4 best known in the world. The Oriental culture and historical structures are also of exceptional value... 
 
    - Several international cultural events and festivals take place in Macedonia each year. The best known are: The Ohrid Summer Festival of Music and Drama, Struga Poetry Evenings, World Cartoon Gallery, The May Opera Evenings, The Open Youth Theater, The International Skopje - Jazz Festival and The Graphics Trienale in Bitola. - In Skopje also exists: The Academy For Theater, Film and TV, as well as the Cinematheque of Macedonia (National Film Archive) 
        - In 1905, the Brothers Milton and Janaki MANAKI shot the first filmed material on the Balkans. That is why this year for the 17th time The International Film Camera Festival "Manaki Brothers" is organized in their native town, Bitola...
